Scranton police say a teenage motorist was driving more than double the posted speed limit before his SUV rolled over onto its roof in a drugstore parking lot Tuesday afternoon, sending two people to the hospital.
Thomas Odzana, 18, of Taylor, admitted to driving 75 mph on Birney Avenue - which is posted as a 35 mph zone - when he lost control of the vehicle in which he and three others were traveling, Sgt. James Sheerin said.
When the traffic light at Birney Avenue and Davis Street turned red as Mr. Odzana approached, he swerved in order to slow down, Sgt. Sheerin said. Mr. Odzana then steered the vehicle toward the CVS parking lot, where it uprooted a tree between the sidewalk and the parking lot and flipped onto its roof.
In the vehicle with Mr. Odzana were a man in his 20s, Graham Tomlinson; Dylan Kiehart, 18; and a female juvenile, whose name the police would not release.
No one in the car was wearing a seat belt, Sgt. Sheerin said.
Two of the people in the vehicle were taken to Community Medical Center, but Sgt. Sheerin did not know who was transported nor the extent of their injuries.
Alcohol was not involved in the incident, Sgt. Sheerin said.
Mr. Odzana was charged with careless driving. Further details were unavailable Tuesday night.
