ST. THOMAS — With more than 50 violent crime deaths so far this year, many Virgin Islanders have someone to remember and honor today, the National Day of Remembrance for murder victims.

Ceremonies at both Government House locations will allow the friends and families of victims to share their experiences, honor the memory of their loved ones and come together as a community.

The ceremonies will include poems and personal tributes by the survivors of those killed.

On St. Thomas, the event will begin at 10 a.m. at Government House. On St. Croix the ceremony will start at 6 p.m. at Government House. The events are open to the public.

Sept. 25 of each year is recognized as a National Day of Remembrance for murder victims. The annual observance was started by Parents of Murdered Children, which was formed by Robert and Charlotte Hullinger in 1978 after their daughter Lisa was killed on Sept. 25 of that year.

There have been 53 homicides in the territory in 2010, three of which were vehicular homicides.
