ST. CROIX - Police are asking the community to help them locate a vehicle that hit a pedestrian Thursday night and fled the scene.
V.I. Police spokeswoman Melody Rames said Monday that police are looking for the driver of a silver or gray Grand Vitara who was involved in the hit-and-run accident.
About 7 p.m. near Estate Strawberry Hill, a 57-year-old man was crossing the street when he was hit by the Grand Vitara, according to the initial police report. The driver did not stop to assist the victim and left the area, Rames said.
Witnesses told police the driver of the Grand Vitara was a man and that he had been parked on the side of the road for several minutes and appeared to be talking on his cell phone before he pulled out and hit the pedestrian, Rames said.
The victim was taken to Luis Hospital and treated for a number of bruises and abrasions.
Anyone with information about the accident can call 911 or the Crime Stoppers USVI anonymous tip line at 1-800-222-8477.
