ST. THOMAS - A young man and woman died shortly after they were gunned down in their vehicle Friday night, according to police.

Jaquan Murrell, 20, and Tiquana Petty, 18, were driving in Anna's Retreat near Tutu Hi-Rise housing community when they were struck by multiple gunshots just after 10 p.m. Friday.

V.I. Police responded to reports of shots fired and found a blue Suzuki riddled with bullet holes when they arrived. Murrell was in the driver's seat of the vehicle, and Petty was in the passenger's seat. Petty was unresponsive when police arrived, according to V.I. Police Department spokeswoman Melody Rames.

An ambulance transported Murrell to Schneider Hospital, where he died in the following hours.

Both Murrell and Petty lived in the Tutu Hi-Rise, Rames said. Rames did not know the nature of Murrell and Petty's relationship.

It was not the first time that Murrell was shot this year.

He was hospitalized after he sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his lower body and to his chest during a shooting that claimed the life of his friend, 22-year-old Kishawn Doyling, in January.

Doyling died in the early morning hours of Jan. 24 after he and Murrell were shot while in Murrell's car driving in Mahogany Estate the evening before. It is unclear if the car was the same one involved in Friday's incident.

Before Doyling died, neither Doyling nor Murrell was able to identify who shot at them.

It is unknown how many assailants shot at Doyling and Murrell in January, nor is it known how many shot at Petty and Murrell on Friday.

When V.I. Police arrived on scene Friday, they collected evidence, including shell casings that were scattered around Murrell's vehicle as well as a firearm that was in Murrell's possession.

Anyone with information about the shooting can contact detectives at 714-9834, 715-5522 or 911 or call the territory's anonymous tip line, Crimes Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-8477.
