ST. CROIX - Police arrested a second individual who they said assisted Elvis Davis in assaulting another man inside a Christiansted bar in May.
Nelson Ayala, 25, of Harbor View housing community appeared before Magistrate Jessica Gallivan on Wednesday morning and was advised of his rights on charges of third-degree assault and possession of a dangerous weapon during the commission of a crime of violence stemming from a May 27 incident.
According to V.I. Police Detective Anthony Hector, the victim told police he went to pick up a friend from Morena Bar in Water Gut about 3 a.m., and while there, Davis and another man - who was later identified as Ayala - attacked him by hitting him with a broken bottle and a handgun, causing injuries to his arm, eye and head.
Hector said in addition to reports from the injured man and a woman who was at the bar, police also reviewed a surveillance video, which captured the attack at the bar and police were able to identify Davis and Ayala from the footage.
Warrants for both men were issued in the case shortly after, but were never executed because police could not locate the men.
Davis was arrested on the charges earlier this week after police took him into custody in connection with an armed robbery Sunday in Estate Glynn. Ayala remained at large until Tuesday night when he was located and arrested by police on the warrant.
Bail for Ayala was set at $25,000. No motion for his release was made following his advice-of-rights hearing on Wednesday,
Davis and Ayala remain jailed at Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility unable to post bail.
