ST. THOMAS - Another shooting connected to Carnival activities left three men wounded Sunday evening.
The men told V.I. Police on St. Thomas that they were walking near Emile Griffith Park on Veteran's Drive when they were shot about 7 p.m. Sunday, as the Carnival water sports boat races were winding down.
The victims, age 34, 33 and 23, were shot in their lower bodies, according to V.I. Police Department spokeswoman Melody Rames.
Strangers transported the men to Schneider Hospital for treatment, the men told police. The men said that they heard shots while walking, though they did not know who shot at them.
Police discovered several spent shell casings, a cell phone, a firearm and a bulletproof vest near the crime scene, Rames said. They also found that several vehicles had sustained damage during the shooting.
The shooting took place just as the water sports activities of Carnival were winding down nearby on Veteran's Drive, according to Government House spokesman Jean Greaux Jr. He said that the police's investigation is revealing that the shooting likely was a retaliatory action.
"I couldn't say what's driving the psyche of the people that are using Carnival for retaliation," Greaux said.
