ST. CROIX - For the second time this week, Innovative has experienced an outage because of copper wire theft to the company's outside plant telecommunication facilities.
Willa Fils, Innovative public relations manager, said Wednesday afternoon that some time overnight on Tuesday there was an incident that affected service for about 130 customers in the Salt River and Gentle Winds Condos area.
Those customers were some of the 180 that were affected by a similar disruption of service overnight on Sunday, she said.
Fils said an outside plant technical team was dispatched and began working Wednesday and continued to work until service was fully restored Wednesday afternoon.
Deliberate disruption of telecommunication services is a federal offense because it can affect the ability of emergency responders and other individuals to communicate, Fils said.
Innovative has enlisted the aid of local and federal authorities in apprehending these perpetrators, and the company is asking anyone with information about the thefts to contact the authorities.
Innovative has had about 10 incidents of theft since July.
Incidents included reports of spans of 400-pair cable being stolen, leaving hundreds of Innovative Telephone subscribers without service each time.
Police believe a number of people are involved and have arrested three individuals who they believe played a role in various aspects of a copper theft ring, but others still are being sought.
Anyone with information can call police at 911 or call the confidential tip line at Crime Stoppers USVI at 1-800-222-8477.
