Six unattended children were injured early Saturday in a fire in a Frits E. Lawaetz housing community apartment on St. Croix, police said.
The 3- to 14-year-old children suffered minor burns, according to a Police Department statement. A 5-year-old child with burns to 15 percent to 20 percent of his body was flown off-island for treatment, according to police.
Neighbors called 911 just before 3 a.m. Saturday.
Police said the 14-year-old child first assisted three of the younger children from the Frederiksted apartment and then went back for the last two children. All of the children were taken to Luis Hospital for treatment.
The two mothers of the children were not in the apartment at the time of the fire, according to the police statement.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Bureau are investigating the incident along with members of the V.I. Fire Service.
As of Sunday, no arrests had been made in the case while it remained under "active investigation."
