ST. CROIX - V.I. Delegate to Congress Donna Christensen said in a statement released this weekend that Anthony Babauta has resigned his position as Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Insular Affairs.
The Daily News was unable to confirm the information with the Department of Interior on Sunday.
In November, The Daily News reported that Babauta had been placed on leave pending an investigation by the Interior Department's Inspector General.
"The Interior Department's Inspector General is currently conducting an investigation concerning the Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas. While the Department has not reached any conclusions, the Assistant Secretary has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation," Interior spokesman Blake Androff said in a written statement in November.
Androff said at the time that Eileen Sobeck had been named acting deputy assistant secretary for Insular Areas and would lead the department's Insular Affairs team during Babauta's absence.
It was not clear on Sunday whether the investigation was complete.
In the statement her office released this weekend noting Babauta's resignation, Christensen praised Babauta's efforts for the territories and his service.
