ST. CROIX - A 22-year old man arrested during the weekend on charges that he choked a woman, made his initial court appearance Monday morning.

Jumanne Christian appeared before Magistrate Judge Miguel Camacho to be advised of his rights on charges of second-degree assault and false imprisonment.

According to court documents filed by police officer Moses Francis, police received a call from the woman reporting that Christian had assaulted her and held her against her will.

He said the woman told police that she was at Christian's apartment in Estate Peter's Rest when they began arguing, and as the confrontation escalated, he grabbed her by her arm and began hitting her. She said he then took his hands and grabbed her by the neck and began strangling her, restricting her from being able to breathe, according to the court document.
