Today is the official start of election season as prospective candidates can begin to pick up their nomination packages.

In order to comply with federal law regarding sending absentee ballots to military personnel overseas, the entire timeline for the territory's elections has been pushed up.

While candidates used to wait until summer to pick up nomination paperwork ahead of the September primary election, the primary is now scheduled for Aug. 2.

Last week, election officials and political party leaders were in conflict about who would run the primary and who would pay for it, leaving the whole matter up in the air.

Despite the confusion that has yet to be resolved, Supervisor of Elections Caroline Fawkes said the nomination packages will be available today.
