ST. THOMAS - The woman and man caught with almost 19 pounds of marijuana in their luggage when they arrived at King Airport appeared in District Court on Wednesday for their detention hearings.
Aumon Siddique and Melroy Burgan, who flew into King Airport on Saturday, were being detained by the U.S. Marshals Office.
Burgan was released Wednesday after his detention hearing, at which his bail was set at an unsecured bond of $10,000. Court documents available to The Daily News did not indicate whether Siddique had been released or the amount of her bail.
Burgan and Siddique were arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute Saturday after they arrived on Spirit Airlines Flight 201 from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents had a K9 unit dog inspect the luggage from the flight before passengers retrieved their luggage. Agents said they found bundles of marijuana packed in carbon paper in two pieces of luggage after the dog indicated that the luggage might contain an illegal substance.
After agents made the discovery, they released the luggage to see who would pick it up, according to court documents. Burgan and Siddique picked up three bags, two of which had marijuana packed inside, according to court documents.
