ST. THOMAS - Heavy equipment and work crews have spent the last week clearing an overgrown piece of land along Lover's Lane in Estate Taarneberg, and the new look is remarkably different.

Located across from Barbel Plaza, the area that used to be a bush-covered hillside is now bare dirt with several old concrete structures exposed.

The 2-acre property belongs to the St. Thomas Federal Credit Union, which bought the property from the V.I. Housing Finance Authority in 2011.

Credit union treasurer Clifford Graham said the land is being cleared in advance of a construction project for a banking facility. That facility is currently in the design phase, and construction has not yet begun, Graham said.

He said the area was overgrown, filled with trash and had vagrants living in the existing pump room and cisterns on the property.

The property was a part of the former Warren E. Brown housing community, which was destroyed in Hurricane Marilyn in 1995. The buildings were demolished soon after the storm, and the property has been sitting vacant ever since.
