ST. CROIX - What started out as a routine traffic stop in Frederiksted on Thursday night resulted in the arrest of a 53-year-old man on drug possession and distribution charges.

Ricky Heywood, of Estate Smithfield, was arrested at 8:15 p.m. Thursday and charged with possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute it.

According to a probable cause fact sheet filed in V.I. Superior Court by V.I. Police Officer Luis Amaro, the charge stems from an incident in which Amaro and his partner saw a small car traveling at a high rate of speed on Fisher Street without its headlights on.

Amaro said they caught up to the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop and saw the driver, now identified as Heywood, try to hide something in the center console of the car.
