ST. CROIX - Traffic eastbound and westbound on Morning Star Hill slowed to a crawl early Friday morning after a school bus toppled over, landing on its side in the road.

No students or passengers were aboard the bus, according to the V.I. Education Department.

The female bus driver was not seriously hurt in the accident and was treated at Luis Hospital and later released, according to Education spokeswoman Ananta Pancham.

The department received information just before 7 a.m. that the bus had rolled over, Pancham said.

According to the emergency dispatch call log, the call for assistance with a traffic situation was reported at 6:50 a.m.

Morning Star Hill is a steep winding road on a segment of Northside Road that Connects Estate St. John to Estates Concordia and Glynn.

Pancham said the bus was westbound, traveling down the hill, when the driver encountered some type of trouble, lost control and the bus tilted over.

Pancham said she did not have all of the details about the circumstance of the accident. Investigations launched Friday morning by Abramson Enterprises, which owns the buses, as well as independent investigations by the department's school safety inspector and the V.I. Police Department should answer all of the questions that are outstanding, she said.

According to police, a traffic investigation has been launched that will determine whether speed, a defect with the bus, the rainy terrain, driver error, or none or all of those factors may have contributed to the accident.
