ST. CROIX - The V.I. Caribbean Friendship Committee held the 2011 Back to School Summer Splash at the D.C. Canegata Ballpark Saturday to send students on St. Croix back to school in style.
Past events were held during a three-day village, but this year was shortened to a one-day event, according to Averil George, the president of the organization.
Four hundred backpacks were given to children, and each backpack contained pens, pencils, erasers, water bottles, crayons and sharpeners, George said.
The backpacks and the school supplies were donated by the V.I. Caribbean Friendship Committee, Seven Seas Corporation, V.I. Water and Power Authority, Innovative, HOVENSA and V.I. Tourism Department, she said.
D.J. Carl, Sabor Latino, the Spectrum Band and the Superior Court Rising Stars Steel Orchestra provided entertainment throughout the afternoon and evening.
Entertainment for the students included Vivi the Clown, face-painting and a inflatable bouncers.
"It's a family fun day, where different people of the Caribbean come together to celebrate and unity" she said. "We wanted to give back to the children in the community. Education is one of the priorities that the committee wants to focus on."
The V.I. Board of Education made a $150 donation at the event to assist the committee with education initiatives.
George also thanked government agencies that helped put on the event, including the Governor's Office, Lt. Governor's Office, V.I. Housing, Parks and Recreation Department, the V.I. Property and Procurement Department, V.I. Public Works Department, V.I. Agriculture Department and V.I. Waste Management Authority.
