ST. THOMAS - Police are investigating a first-degree robbery reported Saturday night at Valu Foods grocery in Estate Smith Bay.
Store owners told police a man armed with a handgun entered the store and demanded money, which was given to him from the cash register, according to a press release issued Monday by the V.I. Police Department. Witnesses described the man as about 5 feet, 9 inches tall and wearing a straw hat, black shirt, black pants and black shoes.
The suspect also took money and credit cards from the owner's purse, the release states.
After the robbery, the suspect fled the store, and the male owner pursued him around the side of the building. Witnesses told police the suspect may have fled the area in a white or brown four-door Chevy or Toyota vehicle.
When asked for a more specific description of the vehicle, Police Department spokeswoman Melody Rames said the initial police report did not contain that information. She gave the same response when asked whether shots were fired and said the amount of cash stolen was undetermined.
No one was injured during the robbery, according to the release.
Anyone with information in the case can call V.I. Police detectives at 714-9834 or 715-5522. Information can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
