ST. THOMAS - The Humane Society of St. Thomas is hosting its annual fundraiser "Barktoberfest" from noon to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at its facility off Weymouth Rhymer Highway.
This year's event will feature a host of activities that should run the gamut from silly to scary and will include three different pet contests.
Animals rule the day during Barktoberfest, and attendees who do not have their own pets can adopt one from the Humane Society. In fact, one of the events during the day of activities is a parade of adoptable pets, during which Humane Society volunteers will show off some of the cute and friendly animals available to go to a new home.
Those who bring their own pets to Barktoberfest can enter them in any - or all - of the contests, which start at 2 p.m. with a funniest costume contest. So pet-owners are not left out, at 2:30 p.m. there is a best pet-owner combo costume contest, which is followed by a "Best Kisser" contest at 3 p.m. The entry fee is $10 per contest or $25 to enter all three.
There also will be activities especially for kids, including a haunted trail, where daring explorers can search for the Cowfoot Woman. Trail tours will be at 3:30, 4, 4:30 and 5 p.m., and those who want to walk the haunted trail must register for one of the available time slots.
Kids also can try out their artistic Halloween skills at a mini scarecrow-making station, and V.I. Police officers will put on a K-9 demonstration.
A number of vendors and exhibitors also will be at Barktoberfest to showcase their products and services, and Humane Society's No Flea Boutique also will be open.
Food and beverages will be available for sale, and music will be provided by DJ Web from 3 to 4 p.m. and by DJ Pocket Change from 4 to 5 p.m.
