Illegal dumping of septic tank causes foul odor at Brassvue plant

ST. THOMAS - A foul odor hung over the Brassvue wastewater treatment plant Wednesday after someone dumped septic tank contents nearby, the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority said Wednesday.

The odor will probably dissipate by Friday, according to Waste Management spokeswoman Stella Saunders.

Waste Management personnel discovered Sunday that a manhole near the plant had been tampered with and surmised that a hauler, or a resident, dumped the contents of a septic tank into the hole. The contents entered those of the wastewater treatment plant and threw off the bacterial balance of the plant, causing the foul odor, according to Saunders.
