ST. THOMAS - The V.I. Health Department officially reopened its immunization clinic at Schneider Hospital on Thursday after a car crashed through its outdoor wall Sunday, temporarily closing the office.
The office patched up the damaged wall with a temporary cover, which is visible from the outside of the hospital, where the clinic is located on the second floor. The second floor is at ground level on the back side of the hospital building.
The car that went through the wall was driven by a patient who had checked himself into the Emergency Room for treatment and then decided that he should leave, against hospital staff's advice.
When hospital staff tried to get the patient to check himself back into the hospital, he drove his car into the wall of the hospital, officials said.
The patient received treatment for any resulting wounds and thereafter was checked into the hospital's behavioral health services.
Hospital officials could not be reached Thursday evening to comment about whether they had estimates of the damage done to the clinic or how much repairs to the building would cost.
However, the clinic is up and running again. It is expecting a flood of visitors in the next few weeks because of the start of schools throughout the territory. All students must have up to date vaccinations.
The clinic is holding special hours because of the nearing start of school:
- 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the University of the Virgin Islands campus on St. Croix - for college students only.
- 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today at the Immunization Clinic at Schneider Hospital on St. Thomas - for kindergarten through 12th grade only.
- 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at the Morris F. de Castro Clinic on St. John - for kindergarten through 12th grade only.
Beginning Monday, vaccinations will be administered by appointment only at the St. Thomas clinic. Residents can call 774-7477 ext. 2150 to schedule an appointment.
Additionally, the St. Thomas clinic will be closed Tuesday and Thursday for staff to conduct special vaccination outreaches for children in kindergarten through 12th grade at the Morris F. de Castro Clinic on St. John.
