Innovative Telephone customers in Charlotte Amalie, including a number of V.I. government agencies, experienced service outages on Tuesday resulting from damage done to a major cable on Monday.

"Someone damaged a major cable in Charlotte Amalie when a jackhammer was used to excavate on Norre Gade. As a result of this damage to Innovative's facilities, telephone customers in the vicinity are without service," Senior Vice-President of Operations Terry Falls said in a prepared statement Innovative released Tuesday.

The affected locations include Agnes Fancy, Commandant Gade, Dronningens Gade, Hospital Ground, Jeppes Gang Gade, Lerkenlund, Norre Gade, Prindsens Gade and Taarneberg.

Technical crews were on site addressing the outage and would continue to work until telephone service is fully restored to working order, according to Innovative.

Government House released a statement Tuesday saying that Government House on St. Thomas had a telephone service interruption to its main switchboard number, 774-0001, starting Monday and continuing through the day on Tuesday.

The outage is affecting incoming and outgoing calls.

The V.I. Human Services Department released a statement about a service outage to its Queen Louise Home for the Aged, saying the phone lines had been inoperable since Saturday and that Innovative Telephone technicians would take two to three days to repair a major line that was cut.

Human Services asked the public to use phone number 228-1613, or Supportive Services at 643-1017, to contact the home.

The V.I. Corrections Bureau also released a statement about its phone lines being inoperable at the Criminal Justice Complex on St. Thomas.

The department asked that "in the case of urgent or emergency matters," callers contact the Alva Swan Annex at 779-7919.

The V.I. Education Department also said that the phone number to the department's main complex on Kongens Gade, 774-0100, also still is not working.

Innovative spokeswoman Jennifer Matarangas-King did not return a call to The Daily News on Tuesday afternoon seeking information about when officials expect phone service to be restored.

For cable TV or phone repairs, Innovative customers calling from land lines can dial 912. Customers using wireless phones can reach the repair center at 778-1742.
