ST. CROIX - Looking for a fun way to continue the holiday festivities this weekend?
The Women's Coalition of St. Croix is offering a karaoke fun night at Reminisce Restaurant on Saturday night, with an eye toward generating funds to support its programs.
"We've never done a karaoke event before, but some of our members thought it would be a fun thing to do," said Women's Coalition co-director Mary Mingus.
For the event, a $20 donation at the door will get you complimentary wine, hors d'oeuvres and the chance to sing your heart out at karaoke. A variety of prizes also will be raffled off. There may be games as well, Mingus said.
Peter Clements will be the DJ for the event.
Mingus noted that great karaoke fun may have little to do with how well a person sings.
"It's not a competition. It's just a night of fun," she said. "And it's a way to support The Women's Coalition."
The nonprofit provides advocacy, programs and services aimed at ending all forms of violence.
Event organizers are hesitant to state a fundraising goal, as the karaoke fun night is the first of its kind for the nonprofit.
However, Mingus said that because of the fragile state of the economy, the organization is, for now, working to expand the way it raises funds.
The organization's biggest fundraiser in the past was its Winter Art Auction, but that will not take place this season, Mingus said.
At least for now, she said, $125 per ticket fundraisers are on hold.
"Because of the state of the economy, what we're going to do this season is do a lot of fun events," she said.
Raffle tickets at Saturday's event will be $2 each or 3 for $5, she said. Prizes include tires, gift baskets, orchids and massages.
The karaoke fun night fundraiser is scheduled to run from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday at Reminisce Restaurant in Queens Quarter.
Sponsors for the event include Diageo, Innovative, Malloy Tires, Viking Corporation, FirstBank, Abramson Enterprises and Quality Auto Parts and Divine Funeral Services, Mingus said.
"Also, a really big thanks to Reminisce," Mingus said. "We're hoping that people have a great Thanksgiving, take a break and come join us for karaoke."
