Q: Who are some great personality figures that have impacted the Savan community?
A: Five personality figures that come to mind are:
1) Emile Griffith, who grew up in the area just north of the Catholic school yard. As a young boy, he migrated to New York and as folks like to say, "The rest is history." Not only local history but national and international boxing history as well. Last time I checked, Emile was ranked as one of the greatest boxers of all time in both the national and international Hall of Fame lists.
Since I lived in New York at the time, this home boy was making history. It goes without saying that I was one proud Virgin Islander to be able to witness his stardom firsthand. I also was blessed to see him beat the hell out of Benny "Kid" Paret in Madison Square Garden. Though I didn't want him to kill Paret, I wanted Milo to beat him real bad, because Paret kept insulting Milo even during the fight. This was my first visit to the Garden.
