ST. CROIX - A 36-year-old man remains jailed in the territory awaiting extradition after being arrested on a warrant on charges that he is wanted in Arizona.
Tashish Fitz of Fredensthal was arrested at 4:45 p.m. Thursday and charged with being a fugitive from justice after a warrant from Arizona was executed against him.
According to court documents, Fitz was born on St. Croix but lived in Arizona and other parts of the United States, where he had built up an extensive criminal record on charges that include drug possession, burglary, fraud and weapon possession.
He returned to the territory, and authorities here were notified that he was wanted by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office on money laundering and possession of marijuana charges.
A joint task force that included federal and local agents converged on Fredensthal on Thursday afternoon to execute the warrant, and they took Fitz into custody without incident.
A search of Fitz's home and person was conducted, and police found that he was in possession of a .45-caliber handgun with 17 live rounds. At 4:56 p.m. Thursday, Fitz was charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm.
Bail for Fitz was set at $25,000.
During Fitz's advice-of-rights hearing Friday, V.I. Superior Court Judge Harold Willocks denied a motion from the defense seeking that Fitz be released to a third-party custodian after they both post 10 percent of the bail and sign an unsecured bond for the balance.
He remains in custody at Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility pending his extradition to Arizona.
An extradition hearing has been set for 10 a.m. Nov. 15.
