The Bovoni Landfill on St. Thomas was closed Friday following a breach in the methane gas collection system.

As a safety precaution, the landfill was immediately closed once the breach was discovered for the remainder of Friday, according to a statement the Waste Management Authority issued.

Repairs were expected to be completed later Friday, and the incident was localized and presented no immediate danger to the surrounding area, according to the statement.

The Bovoni Landfill will resume regular business hours from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.
