ST. THOMAS - With a fitting musical tribute Monday, the U.S. Navy Band headquarters in Millington, Tenn., was named after St. Thomas native Alton Adams Sr.
Adams was the first black bandmaster in the U.S. Navy. He organized three Navy bands that toured the mainland during 1924, and he put together the Navy's first integrated band in 1942.
Best known in the territory as the composer of the Virgin Islands March, Adams was also a journalist, composer, hotelier and veteran of World Wars I and II.
