NOAA to host Endangered Species hearings

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is hosting a series of public forums to discuss possible coral species being added to the Endangered Species list. NOAA Fisheries is proposing Endangered Species Act listings for 66 corals: 59 in the Pacific and seven in the Caribbean.
In the Caribbean, five species are proposed as endangered and two as threatened, and a proposal also has been entered to move staghorn and elkhorn corals from threatened to endangered. NOAA will make a final determination as to whether any of the species warrant listing by Nov. 30.
The forums will be:
- On St. Croix from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Christiansted National Historic Site, Guinea West India Company Warehouse, Slave Market Building, 2100 Church Street, No. 100, in Christiansted.
- On St. Thomas, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Windward Passage Hotel in Charlotte Amalie.
