ST. THOMAS - One lucky Lockhart Elementary School teacher was just as elated as her students to receive a box full of school supplies Tuesday.
"For years I've been dipping into my pockets," said Earline Mills-Jolly, who teaches first grade at the school.
Mills-Jolly has taught at the school for five years, though she has been teaching for 25.
The principal of the school, Audrey Bowry, earlier this year nominated Mills-Jolly to receive $1,000 worth of school supplies from OfficeMax.
The office-supply chain store has each of its stores in the nation choose a school from AdoptAClassroom.org, and then each store calls their school-of-choice to find out which of the school's teachers deserves such a gift.
Bowry said she immediately thought of Mills-Jolly.
"She ensures that all of her students are cared for, especially the ones that are not at grade-level. She works with them even at lunch and after school," Bowry said.
The gift was a complete surprise to Mills-Jolly, who was in the midst of instruction when a parade of OfficeMax employees filed into her classroom Tuesday morning with a bouquet of flowers and a box of goodies.
The children were just as surprised and were squealing once they were allowed to take a look at what was inside the box.
"I am proud of my teacher," said Alaisha De Los Santos, 6. "I love art. I'm ready to take those books and markers."
The box was filled with erasers, paper, crayons, markers and more. Mills-Jolly also received a digital camera and Kindle Fire for the classroom.
In addition to the one box, the school also received an additional $400 worth of school supplies from the community. OfficeMax collected the additional school supplies using a donation box at the front of the store.
Nationwide on Monday, OfficeMax granted $1,000 worth of school supplies to 1,000 teachers as part of its program "A Day Made Better," which was started seven years ago.
