ST. CROIX - Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility has lifted all lockdown restrictions after lab results ruled out meningitis as the cause of an inmate's illness.
Government House released a statement Wednesday afternoon saying that the results of the test for meningitis were negative and the facility has returned to normal operations.
Prison officials put the facility on lockdown Friday after medical staff became concerned Thursday night that an inmate who had been sick for about a week might have meningitis. That inmate was hospitalized, and protocols to prevent possible spread of infection were implemented, prison officials said.
Officials modified some of the restrictions on prisoner movement later on Friday as preventative treatment was given to staff and inmates and different areas were cleaned and disinfected.
Corrections Bureau Director Julius Wilson said the restrictions gradually were eased during the next few days.
