Permits available for Hurricane Hole mooring

The Virgin Islands National Park is asking vessel owners who had 2013 storm mooring permits for Hurricane Hole and wish to keep them for the 2014 storm season to contact Esther Francis at esther_francis@nps.gov before May 23.

Vessel owners who already have responded do not need to take any further action.

The park management will assume that any permit holders who do not respond by the deadline do not intend to use the mooring during the 2014 storm season, according to a statement issued by the National Park Service.

All open berths then will be put into a drawing that will take place at 9 a.m. June 7 at the pavilion in front of the Visitor Center in Cruz Bay.

Any vessel owners who were issued a temporary permit last year can contact Francis to let her know whether the temporary permit holder is interested in the storm mooring berth in the event the original permitee decides to relinquish the spot for another year. If the original permitee decides to use the berth this year, the temporary permit holder will need to participate in the drawing for any open berths.

If a vessel was sold or transferred since last year, the vessel retains the storm mooring berth, not the past owner. This is because many vessels have mooring attachment lines made to suit the storm mooring berth that was assigned, according to the National Park Service.

For more information, contact Francis at 693-8950 ext. 232.
