ST. THOMAS - V.I. police discovered more than 136 pounds of marijuana stuffed inside 68 La Choy Chow Mein Noodle cans Thursday at King Airport.
Police arrested Trevor Dolphin, who had just arrived on an American Airlines flight from Miami, after they received an anonymous phone tip.
Dolphin, who appeared Friday in V.I. District Court for his advice-of-rights hearing, is being charged with distribution of marijuana in excess of 50 kilograms after admitting to having dealt marijuana on St. Thomas for more than a year and a half, according to court documents.
Dolphin said that he received shipments of marijuana from two separate sources and then delivered them on-island.
Dolphin was expected to arrive at about 1 p.m. Thursday at King Airport on St. Thomas, according to the tip that V.I. police Detective Richard Dominguez received that same day.
Dominguez, who is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force, was told how to identify Dolphin based on his first name, the car that he would get into and where he was going - near the cargo area at the back of the airport.
Once Dolphin parked, police approached Dolphin, who said he was there to meet a friend, but was not there to pick up anything.
Customs and Border Patrol K-9 Officer Glen Rogers then arrived with Kyra, a narcotics detection dog, who inspected the barrels in the area and found that three of the barrels contained the 64 oz. cans filled with marijuana. The barrels were addressed to Jamila Felix in Estate Tutu and were addressed from Robelto Browne in Los Angeles.
Dolphin received $50 for each barrel that he picked up and then delivered, according to court documents. Dolphin said that he had been at Bob Lynch Trucking on Thursday to pick up the three barrels of marijuana so that he could distribute the contents.
Bail was set at $25,000.
