ST. CROIX - Police on Friday arrested the second man involved in a Feb. 4 fight between brothers arguing about the volume of a TV set that left both injured.

Eugene Mason, 26, of Peter's Rest was arrested on a third-degree assault charge at 1:51 p.m. Friday. His brother, Robert Williams, 23, was arrested the day of the fight and also charged with third-degree assault, after being treated for his wound at Luis Hospital and released.

According to an affidavit in support of the charges, police were called to a home in Peter's Rest at around 6:30 a.m. Feb. 4, after Williams requested police assistance.

The affidavit, from Officer Keriscia Polidore, said that when she and her partner arrived, they saw Williams bleeding profusely from the right side of his chest.

He told officers that he had gotten into an argument with his brother, Mason, over the volume on the television set, which Williams said had been too loud, according to the affidavit.

The argument turned physical and Williams said Mason stabbed him in the chest with a knife, according to the affidavit. Williams said he tried to call police then, but his grandfather kept unplugging the phone from the wall, Polidore wrote.

Williams told police he then decided to take matters into his own hands, according to the affidavit.

Williams said he went out to the back of the house and started chasing Mason, who tripped and fell to the ground, according to the affidavit. He told police he then slashed Mason on his left elbow with a machete, Polidore wrote.

Williams said he stopped at that point because he felt sympathy for his brother, who got up and ran away.

Williams told police he then went back inside and called police for help.

Police found Mason laying down in front of Gateway Service Station, breathing hard and bleeding profusely from a deep wound to his elbow, according to the affidavit.

After he was advised of his rights, Mason told police that he and his brother got into a fight and wound up assaulting each other, according to the statement.

Mason told police he stabbed his brother with a knife and his brother then slashed him with a machete, and he ran to Gateway to buy a cigarette, the affidavit states.

Officers did not locate the weapons, according to the affidavit.

The brothers were taken to Luis Hospital for treatment, where Williams was treated and released and Mason was prepped for surgery, according to the affidavit. Williams was arrested on Feb. 4 after his discharge, while Mason was arrested Friday after his discharge.

The matter of bail for Mason will be taken up during a hearing this morning. He was advised of his rights Monday morning. He is scheduled for arraignment on Feb. 26.
