ST. THOMAS - V.I. Police identified the man whose body was recovered Sunday from Benner Bay.

While the cause of death still has not been confirmed, police identified the man as 29-year-old Matthew Bailey, who originally is from Florida.

Bailey was living on St. Thomas, according to Melody Rames, spokeswoman for the V.I. Police Department.

Bailey was seen partying with friends Saturday evening, during which time authorities received calls about a loud gathering and a bonfire near the bay, which is near Secret Harbor on the south side of St. Thomas, Rames said.

About 3 p.m. Sunday, St. Thomas Rescue responders received reports of a body in the water.

About 10 rescue personnel worked to retrieve Bailey's body after they rappelled down a cliff and used a harness system to secure and lift the body, according to St. Thomas Rescue officials.

The V.I. Medical Examiner's Office has yet to announce a cause of death.
