ST. CROIX - Police are investigating a shooting that took place Sunday afternoon in Estate Profit.

V.I. Police spokeswoman Melody Rames said Monday that emergency dispatchers received several calls of shots fired. She said officers determined that a 24-year-old man had been injured by gunfire and transported to Luis Hospital in a private vehicle.

Officers who canvassed the area collected a number of spent shell casings from the scene, Rames said.

However, no other information about the nature of the shooting, any motive or persons involved or the condition of the shooting victim was available Monday afternoon.

The incident, first classified as a third-degree assault, has been upgraded to a first-degree assault, according to the Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency web blotter, an online list of calls made to emergency dispatchers.

Anyone with information about the shooting or who may be involved can call police at 911 or call the confidential crime line at Crime Stopper USVI at 1-800-222-8477.
