Public speaks before officials take action on corals

ST. THOMAS ­- The United States Region II Environmental Protection Agency's Caribbean Coral Reef Protection Group's first meeting opened with officials from federal and local agencies seeking public comment on the state of the territory's coral reefs for almost three hours at the University of the Virgin Islands conference center Monday afternoon.

The task force brought together officials from the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the United States Department of Agriculture, the National Park Service as well as the V.I. Department of Planning and Natural Resources and the V.I. Department of Agriculture to craft a plan for protecting the coral reefs, which suffer from degradation due to global warming and ocean acidification.
