ST. THOMAS - Two people died in separate drownings Monday afternoon, V.I. Rescue officials confirmed Tuesday.

Few details were released about the individuals by press time.

On St. Thomas, a man drowned Monday near Sapphire Beach about 4:11 p.m.

St. Thomas Rescue crews were dispatched to the location because the man was overweight and emergency responders needed assistance in retrieving the body, St. Thomas Rescue officials said.

Officials did not know the age of the man or where he was from, whether he was local or from off-island.

On St. John, an individual, whose gender has not yet been released, drowned Monday near Honeymoon Beach about 1:55 p.m.

Rescue officials had no further information about the individual's age or where they are from.
