After a valiant effort to save a 25-ton humpback whale stuck in the shallow water of Great Pond Bay, the whale beached itself on the reef and died.
About 9:30 a.m. Saturday, the Department of Planning and Natural Resources received a call from a resident about a whale possibly being stranded.
The DPNR Divisions of Environmental Enforcement and Fish and Wildlife were sent out to investigate.
By 10:30 a.m., they confirmed that a 35-foot, 25-ton female humpback whale was stranded on the reef surrounding Great Pond Bay.
