ST. CROIX - Hundreds of members of Central Seventh-day Adventist Church and the St. Croix community gathered this past week to celebrate the church's 40th anniversary.
David Sweeney, the celebration's chairperson, said the celebration started with a walk-a-thon on Sept. 18 and continued with nightly events throughout the week at the Estate Plessen church.
"We're celebrating 40 years of God's goodness towards us and looking forward to the future and his eventual coming," he said.
On Sunday, the week's activities culminated with a cultural day and awards ceremony.
Cultural day coordinator Linda Sweeney said they decided to showcase Caribbean nations as part of the celebration. "We have each island come out in their unique cultural style, fashion, music, plants, food, native dish and drinks," she said. "You'll find it in every booth."
"I think cultural day is important because everybody loves where they come from," she said. "When everyone comes together it becomes a Caribbean explosion because everybody is happy and excited."
Participants showcased their islands through songs, dances and skits.
The awards ceremony honored 40 individuals who have who have been outstanding in the church's leadership, Sweeney said.
