ST. CROIX - A judge on Monday found probable cause for assault charges against a Mon Bijou man accused of punching another man and hitting him over the head with a pipe on Saturday.
Edwardo Figueroa, 31, was also advised of his rights Monday morning by V.I. Superior Court Magistrate Miguel Camacho.
According to a probable cause sheet by Police Officer Orlando Benitez Jr., he and his partner were dispatched about 9:19 p.m. Saturday to a disturbance in progress at a house in Mon Bijou. Once there, they spoke to a man who told them Figueroa had hit him.
The victim told them Figueroa had asked him to go to a bordello, and the victim had told him no, Benitez wrote.
The victim reported that Figueroa then called him a "punk," and punched him to the right side of his face with a closed fist, Benitez wrote.
The man said he pushed Figueroa away, and that Figueroa then grabbed a pipe and hit him with it on the right side of the head, according to the document.
Police talked to Figueroa, who was uttering "I didn't do anything, I didn't do anything," Benitez wrote.
When police asked Figueroa to explain to them what had happened, he repeated "I didn't do anything," according to Benitez.
A 15-year-old boy who was there told police that Figueroa had asked the man to take him to a bordello, and because the man told him no, Figueroa had punched him in the face, then grabbed a pipe and hit him in the head with it, according to the probable cause sheet.
The minor and a neighbor held Figueroa until police arrived, Benitez wrote.
Police arrested Figueroa and charged him with third-degree assault and simple assault.
On Monday, the defense requested that bail be set at $1,000 with a 10 percent provision, plus $1.
The prosecution, though, asked for a $25,000 bail.
Camacho set bail at $25,000, but set a 10 percent provision, plus $1.
Figueroa is scheduled to be arraigned, when he will enter a plea to the charges, on July 2.
