ST. CROIX - Criminal Investigation detectives are investigating a non-fatal shooting that left one man injured Wednesday night.
V.I. Police spokeswoman Melody Rames said Thursday that police received reports of shots fired in the Aureo Diaz Heights housing community just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
She said witnesses reported that the shooter walked up to the victim and shot him several times in an unprovoked attack.
Officers who arrived on the scene found the injured man lying on the sidewalk, Rames said.
Witnesses in the area told police the victim was having his hair braided when the gunman walked up to him and shot him.
The man was seriously injured by the gunfire, but survived the shooting, Rames said.
Witnesses reported to police that the gunman was wearing a black mask, a long-sleeve red shirt and black pants at the time of the shooting, and after the shooting, he left the immediate area on foot.
Rames said detectives from the Criminal Investigation Bureau have classified the shooting as a first-degree assault.
Anyone who has any information can call detectives at 712-6037, 712-6077 or 911. She said residents also can call the anonymous tip line at Crime Stoppers USVI at 1-800-222-8477.
