ST. CROIX - After more than eight years, jury selection and trial in the 2004 assault of two people outside a Frederiksted club is scheduled to take place today in V.I. Superior Court.
Barring a last-minute plea deal, Khail Thompson is expected to appear before V.I. Superior Court Judge Harold Willocks in the case where Thompson is charged with reckless endangerment first degree, assault first degree, assault third degree, unlawful possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence, unlawful possession of ammunition, unlawful sexual contact and aggravated assault and battery.
According to the nine count criminal information filed against him on Dec. 18, 2004, Thompson sexually assaulted a woman by touching her intimately using force at the former Culture Lounge Night Club on King Street, Frederiksted, and when she rejected his advances, he hit her several times.
Police charge that Thompson later retrieved a firearm and fired shots outside the club, striking the woman in her back, chest and buttocks and striking a man in the chest and thigh.
In addition to hitting the victims, prosecutors charge that Thompson fired several shots at a third individual.
Some time following the incident, police said Thompson fled the territory and was placed on the V.I. Most Wanted List.
After five years living in St. Lucia, detectives with the V.I. Police Department's Cold Case Squad reviewed the case and received information that Thompson had been seen there. With the help of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and law enforcement authorities in St. Lucia, they were able to make a positive identification and brought him back to the territory to face the charges.
Bail for Thompson is set at $150,000 and he remains out of jail on pre-trial release after posting bail, pending the outcome of the trial against him.
