ST. CROIX - Some residents reacted with cautious optimism on Wednesday to news that, according to Government House, HOVENSA has agreed to put the refinery on St. Croix's South Shore up for sale, with details on how that might happen yet to be hammered out.
"It's great news, but it will be even better news when somebody tells us that somebody's actually buying it," said Mark Eckard, president of the St. Croix Chamber of Commerce.
Gov. John deJongh Jr. met with the entire 30th Legislature out of the public eye on Tuesday to talk about negotiations with HOVENSA.
A press release issued late Tuesday night, after the meeting, quoted deJongh saying that HOVENSA owners had agreed to "a sales process," and that he had agreed to another extension of the interim agreement HOVENSA is operating under, to allow time for completing negotiations.
