ST. CROIX - When Hyacinth Charles began working with the American Red Cross in 1973, she never thought that 40 years later she would still be doing so and loving it.

Her volunteer work has resulted in recognition by the Red Cross, which honored her for her efforts helping a distraught woman in the wake of Sandy, the storm that devastated the northeast United States.

Charles' outreach services as a volunteer have carried her across the country, providing disaster relief assistance in Puerto Rico, Texas, North Carolina and other areas.
