ST. THOMAS - A man fell about 20 feet into an empty cistern Thursday night, according to rescue officials.

St. Thomas Rescue personnel and the V.I. Fire Service responded to a report at about 7:15 p.m. that a man had fallen into a cistern near Wintberg and was unresponsive, said St. Thomas Rescue spokesman Dalis Walwyn.

However, once emergency responders arrived at the scene, the man stirred and was able to use a ladder provided by the responders, Walwyn said. Walwyn did not know whether the cistern was at the man's own residence.

The man suffered only minor injuries, he said. It is not known whether alcohol was a factor in the incident or how he fell into the cistern.
