The Schneider Regional Medical Center board is expected to announce soon that Bernard Wheatley is its pick to lead the St. Thomas hospital.
Wheatley is a St. Thomas native with an extensive background in health care administration, most recently as vice president of operations at Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, Ga.
Schneider Regional has been involved in a lengthy executive search, since CEO Alice Taylor left the post in December 2011 after fulfilling less than two years on her three-year contract.
