ST. CROIX - A fight between two inmates at Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility on Friday afternoon left one prisoner wounded and the other on full lockdown.
V.I. Corrections Bureau spokeswoman Juel Anderson said Friday evening that a preliminary investigation indicates that inmate Denzel Stevens, 29, and Renel Ferdinand, 30, were involved in an altercation following a loud argument Friday afternoon.
Officials believe Ferdinand brandished a weapon - which has not been identified or recovered - and stabbed Stevens twice in the upper body, according to a written communication Anderson sent Friday night.
Stevens was taken to Luis Hospital for treatment, and Ferdinand was put on full lockdown pending the filing of charges, according to Anderson.
The assault was reported at the prison at 2:40 p.m. Friday.
According to Anderson, information from the hospital Friday night indicated that Stevens' puncture wounds were not deep and did not hit any vital organs, although Stevens was scheduled to stay at the hospital overnight for observation.
The prison was on modified lockdown Friday night, Anderson said.
Corrections officers searching for the weapon may have turned up other contraband early Friday evening, when several reports of drug contraband found at the facility were called in to 911 dispatchers.
The assault is under investigation.
