ST. CROIX - A 34-year-old exotic dancer remains jailed after police said she attacked a man with two kitchen knives early Saturday and cut an officer who was trying to intervene at the club where the woman danced.

Maria Ramos Rivera, of JFK housing community was arrested about 3:40 a.m. Saturday, and she appeared Monday morning before Magistrate Miguel Camacho to be advised of her rights on charges of third-degree assault; unauthorized use of a deadly weapon; and brandishing a deadly weapon.

According to the probable cause fact sheet filed by V.I. Police Officer Rolando Huertas, a disturbance erupted inside Club Passion Nightclub where a woman, now identified as Rivera, was advancing toward the owner of the club with two kitchen knives in her hand and threatening to stab him. He said the man tried to avoid being harmed by the woman as she continued to chase him.

Huertas said he was on the scene and tried to defuse the situation by identifying himself as a police officer and ordering the woman to put the knives down, but instead, she turned her attention toward him and began coming at him with the knives.

Huertas said he ordered the woman to drop the knives and as she advanced, he pulled his service weapon, then pushed her down with his hands and grabbed the knives.

He said in the process the woman cut him on his thumb.

Huertas said the woman continued cursing and threatening to stab the man because she said he disrespected her.

During the hearing Monday, Camacho set bail at $25,000 and said the Rivera could be released if she posts 10 percent of the bail amount and provides a third-party custodian.

Unable to meet the conditions of release, Rivera remains jailed at Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility.
