ST. CROIX - The V.I. Waste Management Authority has completed cleaning the sewer collection system in the area of the V.I. Superior Court on St. Croix and the court is expected to be back in full session by Thursday.
V.I. Superior Court Judge Harold Willocks, the court's administrative judge, said Monday that the court is expected to open Thursday for the regular traffic calendar, small claims calendar and other matters.
Today, crews at the court are expected to ensure that the air conditioning units are clean and free of any residual odor and on Wednesday, the court's staff will report to work to handle outstanding filings and orders that were submitted over the course of the last week.
The court will remain closed to the public Wednesday, but anyone with previously scheduled court dates for today or Wednesday can report to the court to be given a card with their new court date.
The court was closed at 1 p.m. March 24. The closure was expanded through this week after the inspection and cleaning of the sewer lines along Queen Mary Highway began last Wednesday afternoon, Willocks said.
The sewer cleaning was part of the efforts to mitigate the intermittent odor that has been affecting the court and neighboring Central High School.
The work entailed opening and venting manholes in the area, which caused the temporary release of odors, according to a statement issued last week by the Waste Management Authority.
With the exception of advise of rights and a sentencing matter handled by Willocks at the Almeric L. Christian Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, all other scheduled matters before magistrate judges and trial judges were continued without a date.
Despite the closure, the court is still processing petitions for emergency actions such as temporary restraining orders at the Superior Court location. Advise-of-rights hearings are scheduled for 9 a.m. today at the District Court building.
Juror orientation originally scheduled for March 25 has been rescheduled to 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Friday.
