ST. CROIX - Detectives are investigating the armed robbery of a taxi driver that occurred just after 2 p.m. Monday in Estate Grove Place.
V.I. Police spokeswoman Melody Rames said Tuesday afternoon that the incident took place on Route 69 in Estate Grove Place in the vicinity of the Shanty.
The taxi driver told police she was driving on the regular bus route in the Estate Grove Place area and had one male passenger remaining on her bus.
She said she was in the Grove Place area driving north when the man grabbed her handbag and held an unknown object to her side and threatened to kill her. She said she released her handbag to the man, and he ran out of the taxi into a bushy area.
Rames said the suspect is described as being slim, with a light complexion, about 5 feet, 6 inches and wearing a white tee-shirt, long black pants, a black baseball cap with a red and white design on the front and carrying a black backpack.
Officers searched the area for the suspect, but they were unable to find the man, according to Rames.
Anyone who has information regarding the robbery or thinks they know the man aboard the taxi can call detectives at 712-6037 or 911 or the confidential tip line at Crime Stoppers USVI at 1-800-222-8477.
