Tutu man is 2011's first homicide

ST. THOMAS - St. Thomas has recorded the first homicide of 2011 for the territory.
At about 2:25 a.m. Thursday, a 911 call reported a man down in Anna's Retreat. When police arrived on the scene, they found an unresponsive man lying on the ground near Joseph Gomez Elementary School with at least one gunshot wound, according to a statement issued by the V.I. Police Department.
He was later pronounced dead by medical personnel, police said.
Police have identified the victim as 26-year-old Shakir Richardson of Estate Tutu.
The community's assistance is needed in the investigation into Richardson's death, said V.I. Police spokeswoman Melody Rames.
"If you saw or heard anything that could be related to this murder, please call the police and tell them what you know," Rames said in a written statement.
She said Major Crime and Criminal Investigation Bureau detectives are actively investigating the case.
